Our Curriculum

Our curriculum is simply our children’s educational journey

Overview

At Brackenwood Infant School we are committed to providing a curriculum that allows all children to flourish. We create learning environments and relationships that nurture our children and allow them to have the confidence to always shoot for the stars.

Our curriculum is designed and implemented in such a way that all children are able to retain knowledge and develop expertise that will support them in becoming positive members of our community. Their understanding of the world around them will deepen and they will become well equipped for the next steps in their lives.

“Understanding is remembering in disguise with a capacity to explain.”

- Daniel T. Willingham

Aims

Our curriculum will:

1. Provide all children with equal access to a rich, broad and balanced curriculum that is successfully matched to their ages, abilities and interests.

2. Be planned, structured and delivered so that learning is continuous and enables all children to make good progress.

3. Allow children to retain the knowledge and develop subject specific expertise that will allow them to become successful in later life.

4. Challenge our children to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the world.

5. Develop a sense of awe and wonder and encourage children to form their own ideas about the world around them whilst making links between learning.

6. Provide opportunities to build on and expand children’s own life experiences and personal development so that their own cultural capital is increased.

7. Be exciting and offer children a range of first-hand experiences that reinforce learning and underpin their growing knowledge, subject specific expertise and understanding of the world.

8. Provide purposeful opportunities for children to develop their oracy skills.

9. Deepen children’s understanding and provide challenge in a nurturing and supporting environment.

10. Enable children to understand and implement the principles of metacognition and independent learning that are appropriate to their age and ability.

I’ve enjoyed seeing some of the creative ways the school has weaved the curriculum into more innovative ways of learning. Some of the extra curricular opportunities (Mad Science) and class activities like Commando Joe's have been lovely learning experiences for my child. I'm also always grateful for the open line of communication the school has with each parent. It instils a lot of trust and faith that my child is being well cared for.
