As Mathematicians at Brackenwood Infant School children will develop the fluency, knowledge and understanding to use mathematics as a tool for everyday life. Practical experiences and a growth mindset will ensure a solid understanding is gained which will foster a life-long love of maths. As a school we believe that all children can succeed in Mathematics.

Since September 2020, our prime driver for the teaching of mathematics has been Power Maths. This is a whole-class mastery programme designed to spark curiosity and excitement and help our children to develop a confidence in maths. We also incorporate discrete arithmetic sessions to build on children's rapid recall and application skills.

Maths is my favourite subject because it is tricky learning.

I enjoy the harder questions because I like to challenge myself

Maths is an adventure for children (and adults) to immerse themselves in, get creative with, make mistakes, and conquer!

Exciting News

Pearson and White Rose Maths have worked in partnership to power up Power Maths, their whole-class mastery programme recommended by the DfE* and designed to spark curiosity and excitement and help you nurture confidence in maths.

We’ve worked in tandem to develop updated Power Maths print and digital resources for Years 1–6, fully aligned with the new White Rose Maths schemes of learning and with teacher feedback at the heart of the changes. You’ll be able to use Power Maths 2.0 alongside the new White Rose Maths schemes of learning from this September.

Mastering Number

Mastering Number is used as a whole class and group intervention to support children with their maths learning.

‘Mastering Number aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future.’

‘This short video gives a flavour of Mastering Number happening in a Reception class. The class teacher also explains how the programme has benefited all the pupils in her class, and ensured they now have firm foundations when it comes to number sense.’
