Assessment

‘Assessment and feedback should inspire greater effort and a belief that, through hard work and practice, more can be achieved.’

At Brackenwood Infant School, assessment is at the heart of everything we do as it allows us to consistently and accurately identify areas of success for our children and how we might further support them. At our school we have set out 7 key principles that ensure assessment allows our children to flourish.

Key Principles

Assessment is at the heart of teaching and learning

  1. Helps to develop successful learners

  2. Recognises strengths and areas for development

  3. Provides evidence to guide teaching and learning

  4. Provides opportunities for pupils to review their progress

Assessment is fair

  1. Is inclusive of all abilities

  2. Is based around learners’ needs

  3. Draws on a range of evidence

  4. Involves a range of people – all staff, parents, peers

Assessment is honest

  1. Outcomes are conveyed in an open, honest and transparent way to assist pupils with their learning

  2. Judgements are moderated by experienced professionals to ensure accuracy – internally - across classes and years and externally – cross schools

Assessment is ambitious

  1. Places achievement in context against national standards and expectations

  2. Embodies, through objective criteria, a pathway of progress and development for every child

  3. High expectations for all pupils

  4. Evaluates the impact of QFT (Quality First Teaching) and interventions

Assessment is appropriate

  1. Purpose of any assessment process is clearly stated

  2. Conclusions regarding pupil achievement are valid

  3. Draws on a range of evidence to provide a complete picture of achievement

  4. Undertakes only those procedures practically required to allow planning for future learning

Assessment is consistent

  1. Judgements are formed according to common principles

  2. Results are easy to understand

  3. Results are comparable to other school - locally and nationally (EYFS, Phonic Screen, KS1 SATs)

Assessment outcomes are meaningful

  1. Clearly identifies ways for learners to make progress

  2. Results in decisions and actions from day-to-day interactions with learners, taking a periodic overview of progress

  3. Informs teachers/ TAs to plan for future teaching and learning

  4. Helps parents to know how to support their child

  5. Provides information that justifies the time spent

  6. Provides information to SLT and Governors for future planning of resources
