Writing at Brackenwood

Writing

As writers at Brackenwood Infant School we believe that all children should be able to confidently communicate their knowledge, ideas and emotions through their writing. We believe that writing is strengthened by instilling a love for reading within our children. Children who are provided with a reason for writing demonstrate flair and effective writing composition, leading to high quality outcomes.

From September 2020, our prime driver for the teaching of writing has been the ‘Read to Write’ programme. Through English lessons that utilise engaging, vocabulary-rich texts children acquire a wide vocabulary and are taught to use contextualised spelling, grammar and punctuation. This enables our children to write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.

We firmly believe that by supporting children in establishing a love for reading and exposing them to high quality vocabulary, this has a significant impact on their ability to become authors, developing their own, individualised style of writing which they can be proud of.
